Abstract

The article argues that the characteristic features of law enforcement 
activities are the following: 1) has a public-authority nature; 2) is aimed at: 
protecting and defending fundamental social values (in particular, such as human 
and civil rights and freedoms); supporting the legal order and strengthening the 
legal regime; protecting and defending public interests; etc.; 3) has a special and 
professional nature, that is, it is carried out by specially created public authorities, 
as well as by officials endowed with the appropriate competence for this; 4) is 
carried out mainly in a procedural form; 5) is associated with the use of coercion. 
It has been established that law enforcement activity is the main form of 
implementation of the law enforcement function of the state, which is performed 
mainly by specially created bodies (law enforcement agencies), has a procedural 
nature, is aimed at protecting and defending against unlawful encroachments on 
proclaimed social values, legal order, as well as at protecting and defending 
general public and state interests, is carried out on a professional basis and is 
closely related to the use of state coercion. It is substantiated that it is appropriate 
to distinguish types of law enforcement activity depending on the priority areas 
and nature of its implementation, accordingly, we can note the following types of 
researched activity: protection of public order and ensuring public safety; 
operational and investigative work; investigative activity; human rights activity; 
supervisory activity.
